Could you be a ‘Stepping Stone’?
Some of our Young People in care had a fantastic event last week.
Coinciding with ‘National Care Leavers Week’, 12 young people attended a residential course for care leavers on the beautiful Exmoor National Park.
Workers and instructors supported the group and encouraged them to try new and challenging activities.
It was an exciting and packed programme: Learning styles, skills, values and profiles were worked on as well as exploring job roles with extensive questions and discussions with range of employers.
Team work sessions, cooking and craft were enjoyed as well as a diverse programme of instructor led activities. Primitive weapons were made and tried out, Exmoor Zoo made a surprising visit and survival skills learnt around a roaring fire in the woods. The wilds of Exmoor were explored on foot and on bike and at night. The group threw themselves into it with gusto and were ready for another week. They plan to work together again soon, to take their learning further and explore plans to move into the work place. You can see the full gallery of pictures from the event here
Our support for young people doesn’t end as they leave care. We need to recruit ‘Stepping Stones’ carers to provide supported lodgings for care leavers, helping them with the challenges they face and making the transition in adulthood easier. The scheme is invaluable in enabling the care leavers gain life skills such as shopping, cooking, budgeting and cleaning, and enabling young people to move on to independent living.
Stepping Stones placements are relatively short so a Stepping Stones carer can continue to work alongside their caring role. We are looking in particular for those based in urban areas who understand young people and enjoy a challenge.
If you know of someone suitable who works part time or who is retiring perhaps, do help us spread the word.
