Football and Fostering – Yeovil Town Supports Fostering in Somerset

Yeovil Town Football club and Fostering in Somerset joined forces on Saturday 23 December, for an afternoon of family fun and awareness-raising.

Sparky the dragon and The Glovers’ mascot Jolly Green Giant, greeted enthusiastic young fans in the crowd with festive sweets and gave the Glovers a big welcome as they ran out to play Exeter City. Pre-match, they also enjoyed an entertaining penalty shoot-out. Jolly triumphed over Sparky 2 goals to 1.

Alex O’Loughlin of Yeovil Town FC said: “Yeovil Town Football Club is delighted to support a great cause and fun family event, particularly as Ian Flack, our Chief Steward is himself a foster carer. We really hope it helps to find foster parents for children in the local community.”

Adrian Foster is a former player for Yeovil Town FC and now a foster carer, he spoke warmly about the work he does: “It is satisfying to see children in a relaxed environment where they can grow and start a new chapter in their lives. It is especially rewarding to know that my wife and I make a real difference to them.”

Fostering took centre stage at half-time, with a special match ball presentation. The ball was signed by all the players and donated to Fostering Somerset as a prize, for future awareness raising activities.

Councillor Frances Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Children and Families was really pleased with the success of the event. She said: “This was an excellent opportunity to spread the message of our need for foster carers of all ages to provide children with a loving home.

“More foster carers are needed in Somerset right now. If you are over 21, have a spare room and the time to care for a child we would love to hear from you.

“I also want to thank all the staff, players and spectators at Yeovil Town Football Club who made the fostering team so welcome.”
