Social workers scramble up Snowdon for Somerset Foster Carers
Dedicated social workers have trekked to the top of Wales’ highest mountain in aid of a voluntary organisation representing Foster Carers in Somerset.
Mount Snowdon stands at a whopping 3,560 feet above sea level and is the highest point in the UK outside the Scottish Highlands. Nine energetic members of Somerset County Council’s Fostering and Adoption Recruitment Service scaled its summit in aid of the independent Somerset Foster Care Association.
The Somerset Foster Care Association (SFCA) is a voluntary organisation run by Somerset foster carers for foster carers, their sons and daughters, and foster children, established in 2015. The Association aims to bring foster carers in Somerset together, providing them with a stronger voice that could influence and develop support services in the county.
The hike is the latest in a series of events held by the team for the cause. It follows a colourful charity shop fashion show showcased in County Hall’s grade II-listed A Block, and a raucous race night at The Grove Inn in Taunton.
Over £1,000 has been raised through their efforts, with still more in the pipeline – a sponsored event in the Quantocks in early June is set to raise money for the SFCA.
Cllr Frances Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Children and Families at Somerset County Council, said: “The Somerset Foster Care Association is so important as a forum for our foster carers to share their views, shape the services they work within, and support them. Well done to the Fostering and Adoption Recruitment for taking up the challenge and raising funds for the cause.”
Trudy Patch, Chair of the Somerset Foster Care Association, said: “We’d all like to say a big thank you to the service for their support. The SFCA is an independent organisation, so this fundraising on our behalf is very much appreciated.
“The Somerset Foster Care Association is run by foster carers for foster carers, and we are really keen for more carers to get involved – please come along to our coffee morning on Monday 6 June, 10am to 12pm at the Edgar Hall in Somerton to find out more and join us.”
