Starting our fostering journey

“In a world where sometimes you sometimes feel helpless, fostering is one thing you can do that can really make a difference…..”

In this short video, Richard and Theresa share what led them to start their fostering journey.

We are always happy when enthusiastic and kind people want to become foster carers, but we urgently need more of you.

There are nearly 500 vulnerable children in Somerset and not enough foster carers.

Being a foster carer makes a real difference to children’s lives and gives them the support they need to achieve their potential.

To be a foster carer you need to have a spare room, a commitment to help a child, warmth, patience and a willingness to learn. People from all walks of life can apply to foster. It doesn’t matter if you are single, married or in a same sex relationship, own or rent your home, have children of your own or not.

There are lots of different types of fostering, which means you can choose how much time and energy you can offer a child and what suits your circumstances best.

If you are interested in finding out more, call 0800 587 9900, or come to one of our information events happening all over Somerset.

We offer competitive fees and allowances in recognition of the invaluable service foster carers provide.

If you don’t have a spare room, you can also help us spread the word: Like us on Facebook @fosteringinsomerset, follow us on twitter @fostersomerset
